The confusion about body size and class expectations that troubled some of the African-American women paralleled the experiences of two Puerto Rican women. Vera attributed her eating problems partly to the stress of assimilation as her family moved from poverty to the working class.

In so doing, they chronicle their despair and resilience, their depression and fortitude, their ingenuity in taking care of themselves. Methods and Ethics Conducting life-history interviews enabled me to hear in women's own words how they interpreted the meaning of and reasons behind their eating patterns: what it feels like to turn to food for comfort, how they come to see their bodies as liabilities, and what resources have most helped them develop sane relationships with food and their bodies.
