This has a social manifestation in that broad agreement on some historical description is some reason to think it is accurate. Peer review, the academic version of public justification, enforces a coherence within a network of generally accepted ideas.

And as we move toward seemingly more neutral terms like “a group of men,” we lose valuable information. This is the tension; meaningful and informative evidence is interpreted evidence, and that requires some conceptual input from the historian in the present. Writing and reading historiography are social processes; the historian’s social setting influences what is written and how it is read. It is helpful to distinguish between two aspects of a historian’s society that are influential.
