All of these sensations are likely to enter the tactile images associated with our experiences. In fact, mental imagery derived from our sense of touch cannot be restricted solely to manual interactions with objects and how they feel when held in our hands but includes a wide range of skin sensations, pain, and even representations of the body. In our everyday life, we use visual imagery in a number of different situations (such as when we try to remember where we left our car keys; see Kosslyn et al.

However, while haptic identification of familiar objects is both rapid (less than 2 s) and accurate (less than 5% error rate) (Klatzky et al. 1985), performance with other stimuli can be very variable (see Lawson and Bracken 2011, for a review). These results would seem to suggest that tactile and haptic deep representations might suffer from more severe limitations than their visual equivalent.
